You Don’t Have to Take Every Piece of Advice (Even If It Sounds Good)
We’re living in a time where advice is everywhere. Scroll your feed for five minutes, and you’ll be told to quit your job, start a side hustle, post three times a day, meditate at 5 a.m., and negotiate your worth—or else.
And let me be clear: I’m not against growth or bold moves. I’m all for doing what works for you. But that’s the point—it has to work for you.
This is exactly what Tip #21 in Career Gymnastics is about: not being so easily influenced. It’s about learning how to filter the advice you’re getting—and figuring out what actually fits your life, your values, and your goals.
Let’s be honest—advice can be empowering. It can stretch your thinking and help you take action. But it can also overwhelm you, make you doubt your current path, or push you into decisions you’re not ready for. And that’s when advice becomes a distraction instead of a resource.
So here’s what I want you to remember: you are allowed to say “thanks, but no thanks” to advice that doesn’t serve you.
You don’t have to try every tip that pops up on your feed.
You don’t have to follow every viral “how-to” thread.
And you don’t have to let someone’s bold, polished take make you feel like you’re behind.
Instead, pause and ask yourself a few simple questions:
Does this advice align with my values?
Is this relevant to where I am in life or in my career right now?
Do I trust the source—or am I just caught up in how confident they sound?
If the answer to any of those questions feels shaky, it’s okay to leave that advice right where you found it.
Every suggestion isn’t sacred. Every strategy isn’t for you. And every voice online isn’t your coach.
You are the expert on your own life.
And your internal voice? That’s the one that matters most.
This post is part of a new 5-part blog series based on Tip #21 from Career Gymnastics.
If you’re tired of feeling overwhelmed by all the advice out there and want to reconnect with what actually fits your path, stay tuned—we’re going deeper every week.
